2011 Novice Class—May 21 to June 15

The Chester River Rowing Club invites you to try your hand at rowing by joining the 2011 Spring Novice Class, where you can…

– Learn to “scull”—to row by yourself in a single, or with a partner in a double.

– Join the crew in the larger “sweep” boats.

– Meet others who think that rowing on the Chester River is a wondrous thing.

– Improve your fitness & maybe lose a few pounds.

For anyone in reasonably good health and condition, age 15 and up, who wants to learn to row.

Saturday, May 21, 8 to 11 am - Introduction to sweep and scull rowing: in sweep boats, each rower has two hands on one oar (see photo below); in a scull, each
has two oars (see photo above). Novices learn to carry, launch and stow shells safely—without hurting themselves or the boats.

Mondays & Wednesdays, 6 to 8 pm, May 23 to June 15 - Learning to row starts in indoor training tanks, then moves to the river. On the water, novices select the type of boat they want to row and practice techniques they learn from experienced rowers. Saturday mornings, 8 am - Novices row in four– and eight-seat boats with veteran club members.

Wednesday, June 15 - Row, graduation & barbeque.
